New car loan or second-hand car loan: what actually differs

Published 29 September 2026

Short answer

The lender lends against the car, so a second-hand car is judged on its age, condition and valuation, not just the price you agreed. A used car loan also brings the seller's papers, the RC transfer into your name and the move of the insurance. Terms differ by lender, so compare the total you would repay.

How does a lender treat a second-hand car differently?

A new car has a clear price on the dealer's quotation. A used car does not, so the lender values it itself. It looks at the car's age, make, model and condition, and lends a share of that value. That share is not always the price you agreed with the seller, and how long the lender lets you repay also depends on the car's age. Not every lender finances every used car.

Which extra paperwork does a used car bring?

A used car comes with a seller, and the seller's papers become part of your loan:

  • The registration certificate (RC) in the seller's name, with the chassis and engine numbers matching the car.
  • If the seller still has a loan, their lender's no-objection certificate, and the hypothecation cleared from the RC before the transfer.
  • A valid pollution under control (PUC) certificate and the current insurance policy.
  • Any pending traffic challans against the car, which you should find out about before you pay.
  • The transfer of the RC into your name at the RTO, with forms signed by both buyer and seller, and your lender's hypothecation recorded on the new RC.

What changes with the insurance?

A new car is insured before delivery, with the lender recorded on the policy. A used car already has a policy in the seller's name, so the insurance has to move to you along with the RC.

IRDAI's motor insurance handbook says a policy can be transferred to the buyer if the seller informs the insurer in writing, and that the registration and the insurance should stay in the same name, or a claim may not be paid. It also says the transfer has to be recorded within the time the policy allows, or a claim for damage to the car may not be paid. The seller's no claim bonus does not come with the car. It belongs to the seller, and you build your own.

Is a second-hand car loan more expensive?

It often is, because the lender is lending against an older car whose value is less certain. The reliable way to compare is the total you will repay, including processing charges and the cost of closing the loan early, not the EMI or the rate alone. We do not quote rates here, because they change and depend on you and the car. The lender's sanction letter is where the real figures are.

How do I choose between them?

That depends on your budget, how long you will keep the car and what you can afford each month, and it is your decision. The EMI calculator on the new car loan and used car loan pages lets you test amounts, using the rate from your own lender's offer.

Questions about new and used car loans

Can I get a loan for any second-hand car?

Not every lender finances every used car. The car's age, its valuation and the tenure you want all matter, so we shortlist lenders that fit both the car and your profile. The decision is the lender's.

Do I get the seller's no claim bonus with a used car?

No. The no claim bonus belongs to the person who earned it, not to the car. The seller can use it on their next car, and you start building your own. Our no claim bonus guide explains how.

What if the seller's loan is still running?

The seller's lender has to issue a no-objection certificate, and the hypothecation on the RC has to be cleared before the car can be transferred to you. Check the RC before any money changes hands.

Does the loan cover the insurance too?

Not automatically. A financed car needs motor insurance in force, with the lender recorded on it, and on a used car the policy must be in your name. We arrange it alongside the loan if you want.
